Leading A Child To Christ

If you have been volunteering in children’s ministry, and serve the Lord, you will have
the opportunity to tell others about the power and love of Jesus Christ. In order to
witness to the children in terms they will understand it is beneficial to practice. A tool
that I have found helpful is “The Wordless Book”. You can purchase one, or make one
of your own. Use five sheets of construction paper to show the following:
BLACK   (SIN), RED   (BLOOD OF JESUS, LOVE OF GOD), WHITE   (FORGIVENESS),
YELLOW  (STREETS OF GOLD), GREEN  (GROWTH IN CHRIST)
To make a jumbo sized book use poster board or a book can also be fashioned from
pages of felt sewn together. Practice explaining God’s plan of reconciliation (salvation)
to children using common verses.

•        MARK 10:14-15    (let the little children come)  we all have sinned (done things
that are wrong). Sin separates us from God.  God made us to be with Him, and doesn’t
want anything to separate us from Him.
•        JOHN 3:16 (the love of God) God loves us so much that He made a plan to
reconcile us, to bring us together with Him again.
•        ROMANS 3:23 (all have sinned) because we all have done things that are wrong
we need His forgiveness.
•        ROMANS 6:23 ( the penalty of sin)
•        ROMANS 5:8 (forgiveness)
•        1JOHN 1:9 (forgiveness)
•        JOHN 1:12 (becoming a part of God’s family)

I found the “Wordless Book” to be an invaluable tool. Before I practiced telling God’s
plan with it I had difficulty witnessing to children. It was inexperience, the book helped
so much, it only took 15-20 minutes and I was telling the story smoothly, and
comfortably. A little practice goes a long way. Pray always, asking God to open your
eyes to see things differently, to reveal ways to illustrate the truth of God’s love in new
and refreshing ways. A special treat is a “sweet stick”, take a wooden skewer and
thread large gumdrops on it, starting with green, yellow, white, red, and black. Wrap in
cellophane or clear food wrap. Decorate with curly ribbon. Another candy treat is to
simply put jelly beans, one candy for each color, in a small snack sized lunch bag, with
a little poem or pray inside, explaining the representation of each color.  A quick craft
idea would be to thread pony beads of the five colors in order, onto yarn or ribbon to
make friendship bracelets (John 15:13).

Remember, when telling children about the love of God, how blessed we are to share
in the work of the Holy Spirit, we often sow to the wind, and pray that it takes root. Hand
it over to Him, we sow but He is the one who grows each heart.
